Hello everyone. No big progress report today, but I have got some cool stuff to show you, I probably don’t even need to explain what it is!

NOTE: Most of these models have already been UV mapped, and some have been textured, I show the mesh only for most, because the textures are mostly un-finished.

Good work with the “truthfulness”, Alex! I’d love to get my hands on that Hulk model of yours. Especially since I bet you’ve animated it in Inspire :)

Actually I haven’t animated it in Inspire, good a program as it is, it doesn’t support the latest versions of dim3. :\

Out of curiosity, dagn this font size is large, what format are the models? And what did you use to animate them? I’ve made a Wasp model that’s very accurate, one of my best pieces to date. If you do not have one, you can have it.

Since I am using the dim3 engine, it already comes with it’s own animation app. I simply export the textured model to .OBJ format, and then import it into the animator. I then rig and animate it.

I would very much like to see your wasp, however I won’t actually be able to use it, as I will be featuring no M1 enemies in Infested.

Oh, right. What about (the) Hulk? Were you planning to include M1 foes but ran out of time? Since I use Inspire, I model in MeshWorks, and save as .mesh files. I am pretty sure that is exactly what you would use in the dim 3 animator. AFAICR. I have some very brief experience with the engine. I didn’t really get it, and I thought it had too much of a cartoony feel. Something that you to great effect have turned to our advantage, it seems.
I have absolutely no limitations as to what I will include. I will never be “done”. I will just release new versions every time I make an update, each one playable in full. That hulk sure looks tasty. According to M1 physics, how BIG is a hulk in world units? As I recall, they are far smaller than one would imagine, only a bout one world unit tall. Anyway, I could send you the wasp, with textures and all. Or you can just see it in action when I get the first demo release out. It’s on the first level. Hey, if there’s anything you need help with, don’t be a stranger. Might be a bit late, but we could all use a helping hand now and then.

The Hulk is there just because he’s such a great character, and he has no counter part in the other games.

Meshwork isn’t a very high quality 3D modeler, if it works for you, that’s great, but otherwise, I would suggest taking a look at Wings 3D or even better Blender.

Craig Mullins painted the Hulk as being about 1.5 times the player’s height, but I think that’s a tad big. Still, the primary reason the hulk is just about 1WU tall is so he can fit in smaller corridors, I think I’ll be making him a bit larger than usual in Infested, just to scare people more. :)

Looking forward to that demo btw. :)

That’s so strange, though. It’s not like he’s prominent in Marathon 1 either.

Yeah, well I know. It’s not that good. But I don’t really want to make 3D models. It’s just out of necessity. So it’s hard to motivate myself up the learning curve of a new, more advance, program. Maybe some day I should.

Yeah, I’d guess he’s exactly one world unit high.

Would you mind terribly sharing some models with me? I bet I have or could make something to trade.

But he’s so cool!! :D

I’d be glad to just GIVE you some models, but first I want to finish texturing them. We can discuss this more over email:

I used to have that piece printed hanging on my door. I doubt it looked very good, given the technology of the time. I always loved how large and kind of sad it was, and how the pose was taken directly from the game.

I know, it is kind of sad. The marine is has just killed the Hulk, who is slowly dying it seems, and the marine knows he’s dying, so he isn’t shooting anymore, just watching. Baaaw. :’(

You must remember that Drinniols are slaves. I think I’ve even heard somewhere that they are gentle creatures. We do not know how the Pfhor hold leverage over them, perhaps fighting is the only way he will see his family again? If so, that is the image that flashes before his eye as he vainly fights to remain upright, to retain his very life; his desperate bid to save his loved ones shattered by the barking barrel of a gun. What will now become of those he will never again see?
Is that perchance blood, or a stream of alien tears that trickle down his face?

You’ve put a whole new light on the Drinniol and this image. :) Who knew something could be so deep?

Marathon taught us to look beyond the obvious. The story is much deeper than any game-play vid could show. Outsiders or newcomers will only see retro-carnage. Those of us who were raised by this will see the entire spectrum, the juxtaposition of savage brutality and existential philosophy. We are encouraged to be violent, to kill and maim, but at the same time, to question “why”.

Something to say?
